What Are Flex Sensors?
Flex sensors, also known as bend sensors, are a category of sensory material that gauges the amount of bending or deflection. Typically this sensor sticks onto a surface, with varying degrees of resistance. The resistance is proportional to the sensor's bendability as it's used often as a goniometer or a flexible potentiometer.
Types of Flex Sensors
There are various types of flex sensors including but not limited to the conductive ink based flex sensor, the fibre optic flex sensor, the capacitive flex sensor, and the velostat flex sensor.
Applications of Flex Sensors
Flex sensors are applied in diverse areas of research such as in rehabilitative research, computer interfaces, security systems, music interfaces, academics, and more. Some common applications include human machine interface devices like Dataglove, a common MI machine that has a sensing element of deflections. Others include security systems in doors that monitor door movements using a hinge sensor, as well as security systems in buildings that can detect damage to metal structures.
