Cypress Makes HDMI Over USB-C Possible

Recently, a major technological advancement for HDMI cables & adapters took place through Elka International. Elka International – A Taiwan Exporter, Manufacturer, and Trading Company – Has revealed the first HDMI Alternate Mode cable. This cable allows any device that has USB-C video outputs such as cameras and phones to connect with HDMI port-equipped displays such as a television. This also includes HD and 4K televisions. Previously, 4k and HD televisions connected to a USB-C device required HDMI adapters and converters that limited the features of the HDMI devices.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Panasonic and Cypress Semi demonstrated their development of the HDMI alt mode for USB-C specification. It is no surprise now that Elka International is working together with Cypress Semi because their EZ-PD-CCG3 silicon is doing the conversion and management work. Due to EZ-PD CCG3 USB-C controller’s upgradeability and programmability to simplify and speed up firmware development. The extravagant chip includes a crypto engine and analogue switching for non-USB signals, an ARM Vortex-m0 processor, four serial communication blocks, two 64kbyte flash memory banks, and a USB controller for USB Billboard functionality. With the use of the chip’s crypto engine and twin flash banks, the cables will have stronger resistance to hacks due to Cypress’ authenticated firmware updates.

However, the good news does not end there. There are also gate drivers that allow for control of the cable power feed up to 100W over USB-C Cables. There is also protection against over-current and over-voltage, as well as direct 2.7-21.5v operation due to the regulators. This new, powerful chip and cable technology will build higher upon the stepping stones of the HMDI cables & adapters world. To make things even more electrifying, this technology was demonstrated at the HDMI Developers Conference in Taipei. Previous to that conference, Cypress demonstrated the HDMI alt mode over USB-C at the HDMI Developers Conference in Shenzhen.
