The Common Types of DIN Rails for Electronic Mounting

Posted on November 16, 2021 Michael Rodriguez Electronics

DIN rails are rail mounting systems that permit the secure attachment and assembly of electrical and industrial control products, allowing for various circuit breakers, terminal clocks, and electronic enclosures to be organized with ease. With global standardization of size and manufacturing, DIN rails can be used across multiple industries to secure all compatible products. Whether one is organizing electronic components within an aircraft or for a business, it can be highly beneficial to be aware of the various types of DIN rails that one may use, ensuring that the correct types are procured for a given assembly of components and devices.

All DIN rail products trace back to the Deutsche Industrie Norm (DIN), that of which translates to German Industrial Standard. With the DIN, the dimensions and tolerances of electronic rail products were standardized so that manufacturers could easily design mounting and assembly methods for their products that were compatible with the rail. Originally, the DIN rail was formulated as a project spearheaded by Phoenix Electrical Supply Company and Rhine Westphalian Electrical Power Utility (RWE).

The most common type of DIN rail that one may procure is the 35 mm wide top hat DIN rail, that of which is often referred to as the TS35. Generally, such DIN rail assemblies are used for mounting various industrial control products and components, those of which come in the form of circuit breakers, motor controllers, printed circuit boards, embedded platforms, remote I/O, and more. Depending on one’s particular needs, the TS35 standard rail can be procured with a channel depth of either 7.5 mm or 15 mm. The 7.5 mm depth is considered to be standard and will serve most application needs, while the 15 mm depth is known as a “deep hat.”

For more compact assemblies, the 15 mm miniature top hat TS15 DIN rail option is a good choice. These rails are 15 mm in width, and their depths will often be no deeper than 5.5 mm. Generally, such options are best for mounting smaller components, including those such as relays and compact junction boxes.

The 32 mm C section TS32 DIN rail is another option, that of which is not as common nowadays as a result of the TS35’s popularity. Despite their lower use, such DIN rails surpass other designs with superior support for heavier components. As a result, 32 mm TS32 DIN rails are regularly paired with power supplies, transformers, and other objects with more weight. As the TS32 rail design has been superseded in many ways, one will often need an adapter for the mounting of electrical components that are specifically intended to be used with the TS35.

The final major variation of the DIN rail is the G-type TS rail, which is named for the G-shape that is formed by their design. These DIN rails exhibit a recess on one side that is deeper than the other, the deeper of the two outer channels being situated at the lower edge when the rail is mounted to a panel. With this configuration, increased support is provided to heavy and high-powered electronics that are to be attached.
